The IEN Tranport and Planning group presses government to:

  • reduce overall pollution from transport,
  • provide transport easily accessible to young and old alike,
  • encourage a migration from high to low-polluting transport modes,
  • and to reduce the overall need for transport, aside from cycling and walking.

It does so by meeting with departmental officials, conducting and publishing research, as well as producing press releases and engaging with the media.

The work of the group covers some areas of land-use and planning policy, particularly when there are significant transport implications. The work programme is guided by the Transport and Planning Steering Group (or TAPSG), made up of 7 representatives drawn from the 32 groups.

New members to the group are always welcome; it is preferable if you join one (or more!) of the 32 groups in the network (please see the members page on this website for details) but the group appreciates input and participation from all sectors. The co-ordinator of the group is James Nix. To work with the group, engage on an issue or send a query please email jam...@ien.ie.

Let’s optimise before we scrap

by James Nix, Transport and Planning Policy Co-ordinator of IEN
Key points:

A car efficiency programme is in the national interest; a scrappage scheme unfortunately isn’t. Under a scrappage scheme more money is taken out of the economy and sent abroad and, as the European Central Bank shows finance is diverted away from more worthwhile projects such [...]
